Establishment

The Filmfactory Rotterdam foundation was established through a collaboration involving INHOLLAND University Rotterdam, the Rotterdam Film Fund (RFF) and Rutger Hauer.

For years Rutger Hauer has wanted to organise a Masterclass and share his knowledge of film direction with film professionals and students. 'What I want is to rediscover my profession', Hauer said. 'And filmmakers are the only ones who can communicate that with all their heart and soul.'

INHOLLAND College adopted Rutger Hauer's inspiring vision and, thanks to support from the RFF and the Rotterdam Development Corporation (OBR), the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory Rotterdam was established. Binger Filmlab is the program advisory partner for the Filmfactory.

One of the spearheads of the Rutger Hauer Filmfactory Rotterdam is to respond to the growing audio-visual industry and demand for professionals. In order to do so, an exchange of practical knowledge must take place.

FILMFACTORY 2007 (23 January - 1 February 2007) was the first Rutger Hauer Filmfactory Rotterdam foundation project. The project was an eight-day Masterclass during the International Film Festival Rotterdam, in which Rutger Hauer and other experts supervised thirty participants as they rose to the challenge of creating and producing nine short films that were premiered during the International Film Festival Rotterdam.  From 21 - 31 January 2008 the second Rutger Hauer Filmfactory took place.

Initiators in brief

INHOLLAND
INHOLLAND University is always closely involved in projects that revolve around knowledge transfer. The School of Communication & Media at INHOLLAND Rotterdam places special emphasis on reinforcing the collaboration between education and the AV/Media sector in the region. The college itself offers a Media & Entertainment Management programme that prepares students for a career in management in the creative industry.

RFF
The Rotterdam Fund for Film and AV-media (RFF) was established for the benefit of everyone in and outside Rotterdam who is involved in film or audiovisual media. The agency acts as the financial and technical information point for filmmakers, television producers and documentary filmmakers who wish to realise productions entirely or in part in Rotterdam or the surrounding region.

OBR
The world's largest port city has a long-standing connection to film. Every year, Rotterdam hosts the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). Since its inception 30 years ago, it has become one of the largest film festivals in the world. Rotterdam is a growing media city. Education and professionalisation are two important tools for stimulating and supporting the media industry here.
As an enterprising link between space and economy, the Rotterdam Development Corporation (OBR) creates favourable conditions for the city's ongoing development. The OBR supports Rotterdam's entrepreneurs, working with them to blaze new trails.
